Child Advocacy Voice (CAV) Campaign on Children’s Rights in Kakuma.

Refugee families in Kakuma face significant challenges that impact their children’s well-being, including limited access to education, safety risks, and health concerns. Many children encounter barriers such as overcrowded schools and language differences, leading to high dropout rates. Additionally, the camp environment poses various safety threats, making it difficult for parents to protect their children. Inadequate healthcare services and insufficient food supplies further exacerbate health issues, resulting in malnutrition and developmental challenges.

We stand to address these critical issues through our awareness campaign. We empower parents by promoting access to education and providing practical strategies to enhance child safety within the camp. Our campaign also emphasizes health education, guiding families on how to access essential healthcare services and make informed decisions about their children’s well-being.

This October, Child Advocacy Voice (CAV) took a significant step forward by conducting an awareness campaign on children’s rights within the Kakuma Refugee Camp. In partnership with Global Funds for Children, our campaign aimed to equip parents with the knowledge and resources they need to uphold the rights of their children in an environment where these rights are often challenged by complex circumstances.

Why Our Approach Works for Kakuma

At CAV, we recognize that refugee communities, especially in Kakuma, face unique challenges that impact children’s well-being and development. Our campaign focused on practical strategies that resonate with the specific needs of these families, aiming to foster a safe, supportive environment for all children. By addressing issues like child safety, access to education, health, and creating nurturing spaces, we empower parents to take actionable steps in their daily lives.

Through this campaign:

  • We reached 50 parents this month, all of whom actively engaged in discussions and expressed appreciation for the insights and practical knowledge shared.
  • Parents learned about child safety in a way that acknowledges and addresses the particular risks present in a refugee camp setting.
  • Education and health resources were highlighted, considering the unique barriers to these essential services in Kakuma.

The overwhelmingly positive response underscores that our approach is not only effective but deeply relevant to the needs of refugee families. By tailoring our program to the realities faced in Kakuma, CAV is able to support parents and caregivers in making informed decisions that uphold their children’s rights even amidst challenging circumstances.

Looking Ahead

Inspired by the success of this month’s outreach, we aim to connect with more families in Kakuma next month, expanding our efforts to reach as many parents and caregivers as possible. Together with Global Funds for Children, CAV is committed to creating lasting, positive change by empowering refugee families and fostering a community where every child’s rights are respected and protected.
